ARTIST OF THE MONTH - KEVIN BIBERBACH
The current month is nearly over, so we'd love to present you our latest Artist of the Month: Kevin Biberbach from Germany. He has been one of the first members of our LOOKSLIKEFILM community and his emotional and moody images are still inspiring us every time he posts a new image in our groups. So take your time and enjoy the amazing work of Kevin!
How old are you and where are you from?
I’m a 29 year old guy from Germany and I’ve been living in Cologne since 1st of May this year.
Tell us a little bit about your life in the moment?
Since I’ve just moved to Cologne, I would describe my life as chaos! Wedding season already started and I still need some time to get things sorted. But at least I put up my bed last weekend, which is pretty fine, though.
How did you end up being a photographer?
My love for photography particularly started growing whilst continuously traveling and ultimately became my no.1 main occupation during my studies of Communication & Multimediadesign. In 2014, when I started my own Facebook page, I made myself a quite ambitious birthday present. A 365-day long photo series called „EVRY-DAY“. From the 6th of March 2014 to the 6th of March of 2015, I approached one person on the street per day with one goal: 1 picture a day, 1 spontaneous question, 1 spontaneous answer.
So far, this has been the most amazing but at the same time the most exhausting project I’ve done yet. But it was absolutely worth it because I was not only able to meet a lot of special people but also managed to get a lot of traffic on my Facebook page. I would have never expected that! I was especially delighted about all the kind words, compliments and the motivational messages from all the people that kept accompanying my project.
Due to the project’s growing reach, there also was a growing number of commissions ranging from weddings to certain companies. Because of the project, I soon became able to accept my first jobs as a freelance photographer in the beginning of 2014. Just over a year ago, I abandoned my part time job to pursue photography not only as a hobby but as a profession. The main part of my job now consists of wedding photography, couple adventures and personal projects that I love to do whenever I’ve got the time.
Where do you see yourself in 20 years?
Tough question! 🙈
In 20 years from now, I would like to be a father, having my own little family that I’m proud of with children, that grew up in freedom, without war and fear! This being said, it fulfills my life with joy and happiness to create unique work that really matters to others. This is what I can do with wedding photography now and I hope that it continues to be a big part in my life when I grow older.
What gear are you currently using?
2x Fuji X-Pro2 body
18mm 2.0 Fuji lens
35mm 1.4 Fuji lens
56mm 1.2 Fuji lens
20mm 2.8 Nikon lens on a Tilt-Adapter
85mm 2.0 Petzval lens
I also got a Nikon D750 with different lenses (35mm 1.4, 58mm 1.4 etc.) that I still use every now and then, because you simply can’t get the look/charm of certain lenses like the 58mm 1.4 from Nikon full-frame with Fuji. It’s just different I think! :)
What advice could you give out to a new starting photographer?
Practice your craft! Go out and shoot as much as you can! For me it was a game changer to do a 365 photography project. I learned so much in just one year that otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to learn exclusively working as a wedding photographer.
Did the LLF community change the way you see or shoot weddings, couples etc.?
Every source of inspiration influences you in some way and so the LLF community does, as it is a very big source of inspiration for me. I know it from the beginning and I really love the quality of work that is displayed and the strong community it has build over the last years with artists from all over the world. <3
What plans do you have for this year?
As already mentioned, I need to get things sorted in my new hometown Cologne! (laughing)! I’ve already traveled to Italy and Portugal this year and I would like to go on some more adventures this year. I’m really excited about all the weddings I’m gonna shoot this year and the people I’m gonna meet at this journey and last but not least I’m working on some workshop projects with photography friends that we will hopefully be able to do this year. We will see! :)
