ARTIST OF THE MONTH - ALEXIA MERCADO
It's time again for our new Artist of the Month. We're very happy to present you the work of the talented Alexia Mercado from Mexico. As a steady featured Photographer in our Daily Updates it is absolutely worth to get to know Alexia better and we're sure you will hear a lot more of her in the future. Alexia is 21 years old, so be prepared for what is yet to come...
How old are you and where are you from?
I'm 21 years old and I am from Lazaro Cardenas, Michoacan, Mexico.
Tell us a little bit about your life in the moment?
I live in my hometown and have my own studio. I travel every month to a close place near my state to do collaborations or just to enjoy.
Something that I’ve done since I started shooting is to take pictures of my younger sister. At the beginning it was pretty easy because she took direction well but as growing up her attitude was more distracted which made it more difficult to photograph her, but even then it's still something we both enjoy.
A time ago I met a friend that owns a dress store and since then we've started to work together with a makeup artist. Both of us make publicity of our work and the results are absolutely favorable.
How did you end up being a photographer?
My father inherit the liking for photography. He has always been curious of photography and video. In college I realized that my true vocation is photography and I didn’t think twice about it. I quit college to start studying photography and by that time I had already practiced taking portraits and shooting a few weddings. Since the photography studies finished, I haven’t stopped working.
Where do you see yourself in 20 years?
I see myself with an important trademark, shooting weddings outside my country and documenting photos of my sister.
What gear are you currently using?
Canon 6D
Canon Rebel T2I
50 mm f/1.8
24 - 105 mm
What advice could you give out to a new starting photographer?
At the beginning all of us think that having a good equipment is the best, but it is a mistake. The best way is to practice with the equipment you have, to view a lot of photos, get inspired and start creating. If you don’t have any models available, take pictures of yourself or anything that you can reach. It’s not necessary to make something big in production, simplicity is better.
Did the LLF community changed the way you see or shoot fashion, lifestyle, portraits etc.?
Of course! I already had my style determined but the day I had heard about LLF, my perspective got expanded. Every photo that I take or think about to create gets me a Iot of feedback in the LLF groups and helps me to establish my focus. It’s an inspiring community.
What plans do you have for this year?
This year I have weddings, fashion photoshoots, collaboration trips on my agenda and finally, anxious to take part in a proximate workshop with three great photographers of the same community: Lukas Piatek, Israel Arredondo and Pablo Béglez.
