The name Sean Flanigan is probably familiar to most in the photographic world. A Tacoma Washington-based photographer (his second choice, his first was musician), Sean is what you might call a wiser spender when it comes to time. Besides shooting pics, he also owns Tsunami and Avalanche. We love Sean’s bold approach to photography - this post is entirely in black and white. (ps. can you spot the monkeys?)
1. Why do you make images?
Because I love the challenge. Making consistently good work isn't easy and I'm motivated for continued improvement.
2. What is life to you? What it should be?
The longer I do this I realize my time is the most valuable thing I have. I choose to spend my time doing the things I want to do with the people that matter most to me.
3. Where did you grow up and how did that play a part in your photography?
I grew up in Seattle and Tacoma, Washington. I don't think my geographical surroundings played a part in my career whatsoever.
4. Where are a lot of professions out there - why be a photographer?
Photography was a second option for me. My first was a musician.
5. Do you have a “second profession” or passion?
Punk rock music. Skateboarding. And currently running Tsunami and Avalanche which is a heart project for me and my business partner. We are simultanusly located in the USA and Spain. By trade we are photographers and illustrators- creating all original content for the project. The endeavor is born out of an ideal that we can chase our passions without regard of what anyone says. We break the rules because we aren't interested in following anything or anyone but our own hearts. We let the things in our lives that make our hearts beat become the wind in our sails. And so far it's been a success.
6. What movie did you love recently?
7. Is/Are there any project(s) you wish you could do - or might do?
Currently doing exactly what I want to be doing, ie photography. But it's a little more than that. Photography allows me the lifestyle I want. It's placed me in situations that have changed the course of my life. And I'm fortunate enough to be able to spend my time doing what I want to do surrounded be the people I want in my life.
8. Do you shoot with your left or right eye?
Right.
9. Are there any unseen experimental images in your attic you’d like to show us now?
No. If I haven't shared something there is a reason. Curation is incredibly important.
10. If you were to start all over again, is there anything you would do differently? Why?
I'd do it all the same. No regrets. All my ups and downs have shaped me and I'm grateful for every experience - good and bad.
